Immigration & Ships:
|
Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild - We are a group of volunteers
dedicated to making our ancestors' immigration records easy and convenient
to find. Our mission is to make ships' passenger lists available online, at
no cost to the researcher. Traditional methods of research in immigration
records are time-consuming and expensive, so we created the Immigrant Ships
Transcribers Guild to provide a forum for volunteers to present
transcriptions of passenger lists and related materials. So far, beginning
in September 1998, we have transcribed more than 5,000 ships' passenger
lists, citing over 1/2 million passenger arrivals. |

Publishers:

Genealogical.com - Genealogy Warehouse - "The World's Largest
Publishers of Genealogical Reference Books" - offers reprinted books and
CD-ROM based information. |
|
Higginson
Books - "Proudly offering the Genealogical Community more than
15,000 quality book and map reprints since 1965." I've ordered three key
books from this company (Vorce family history, Claremont (MN) history, and
Mower County (MN) history). I always choose the slightly more costly option
to order in hardback. They reprint on demand, so it takes time, but every
item has been well worth the wait, and they don't bill you until they ship
the product. |

Censuses were taken by the state of
Wisconsin from 1836, when it was a territory, until 1905. The 1836, 1838,
1842, 1846, 1847, 1855, 1875, 1885, 1895, and the surviving fragments of
the 1865 censuses resemble the early federal censuses, listing only the
head of a household by name and summarizing the number of others. The 1905
census was the only state census in Wisconsin to list all the members of a
household by name. |

SEARCH WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY ARTICLES -
contains nearly 16,000 local newspaper articles published statewide between 1860
and 1940. These consist mainly of pioneer reminiscences, portraits of community
institutions, interviews with early settlers, strange anecdotes of eccentric
personalities, and other grass-roots information. These real stories of real
people have not been altered in any way; images of the original newspaper
articles display on the researcher's screen. All of them are easy to search by
personal name or a variety of subject headings, about 50,000 pages of local
history and genealogy in all. |
